Old Book Monday - July 9
Quite a few book bloggers participate in a weekly meme in which they share delicious and mouth-watering pictures of the new books they have recently received. I love strolling through the blogosphere and checking out these pictures. I don’t buy a lot of new books but realized I could still participate by sharing pictures of what I do buy a lot of—OLD books. Hence, “Old Book Mondays”
This week’s “Old Book Monday” features an extremely interesting find: "A Stained Glass Tour in Italy by Charles Hitchcock Sherrill," published in 1912.
I LOVE stained glass, and I'm dabble in creating it (copper foil method), so when I saw this book, mixed into a stack of other old books on the bottom shelf (floor level) I snatched it up immediately! There was no price on it and the antique-shop owner had to call the vendor to get the price. Regretfully, she said, "This is a special item, I'm afraid. It costs twenty-four dollars." DONE!
One of the most interesting things about this book is the dedication:
I'm assuming the author knew the Senor Pena? I don't know. Another old book mystery to solve!
The book is arranged by a touring iternary, visiting each of the Italian provinces, starting first in Rome and then proceeding north. Each province's section then provides a detailed history of the area, history of stained glass in the area, and information--including pictures--of the stained glass treasures to be found in that area.
And, of course, there is also the famed "thirty-three illustrations":
If I ever visit Italy, I'll be taking this book along and using it as my guide!
What about you? Have any recent book acquisitions you want to share?
