Old Book Monday - July 30

Quite a few book bloggers participate in a weekly meme in which they share delicious and mouth-watering pictures of the new books they have recently received. I love strolling through the blogosphere and checking out these pictures. I don’t buy a lot of new books but realized I could still participate by sharing pictures of what I do buy a lot of—OLD books. Hence, “Old Book Mondays.”

This week’s “Old Book Monday” features something a little different... book swag books!

A couple of weeks ago, I attended Readercon, and oh my, there was book swag to behold! Lots and lots of book swag! So here are pics of the book swag of books that caught my eye (and which have all been added to my Goodreads "to read" list).

readercon 01This first item is not swag, but an actual book - one I bought directly from the publisher at Readercon. Tell me this is not the most adorable book you've ever seen!

readercon 02The artwork in this book is amazing - I'm now a huge fan of the illustrator, Kristen Margiotta, who, apparently, has been picked up by Penguin, so I look forward to seeing more of her work! My sister and I both said that if the artwork from this book had been available as a series of posters, we would have snapped those up in a heartbeat!

readercon 03Here we have a couple of dark/gritty sounding fantasy stories. I didn't realize I already had a postcard for The Circus Wagon at home, so I guess this means that I definately want to read it :-)

readercon 04Under the Poppy had no description on the back of the card, so I wasn't really sure what it was but it looked intriguing. The description on Amazon and Goodreads says it is, "a breakout novel of childhood friends, a love triangle, puppetmasters, and reluctant spies." Well, okay, then! Not my usual but it sounds intriguing. The Supernatural Noir just sounds awesome and it's produced by Dark Horse Comics, which is recommendation enough for me!

readercon 07I have been hearing a ton lately about the Bordertown books and clearly I need to read them, along with The City and The City by China Mieville. I don't know how to classify the Bordertown books exactly - urban fantasy, maybe? Noir? There are elves...on motorcycles. So that pretty much tells you everything you need to know right there :-)

readercon 05Steampunk stories, anyone? Oh yeah, you know you want 'em! Timepiece sounds particularly awesome: "A steampunk time travel adventure about a girl, a pocket watch, Frankenstein’s monster, the Battle of Waterloo, and giant clockwork robots taking over London." Ceaseless Steam is an anthology of stories from Beneath Ceaseless Skies magazine--which I now have to check out!

readercon 06Now how meta-meta is this: two books about books! Bibliotheca Fantastica is described as "twenty new fabulous tales of bibliophilic wonder, enchantment, terror, romance, mystery, and adventure." Shelf Life is described as, "Fantastic stories celebrating bookstores" and has an introduction by Neil Gaiman ::fan girl scream:: Alas, both are not out until fall so we'll all have to wait for them.

Okay, that's all for this week--come back next week for Part 2  of my Readercon Book Swag extravaganza with comedic fantasy, epic fantasy, chick lit, and totally awesome stuff that defies classification!
